From Dean Julie Rumschlag:

Dean Julie Rumschlag

Happy New Year!  It’s hard to believe we are already half way through the 2009-2010 school year!  We’ve had so many exciting events this fall at Cab Calloway.  We’ve been focusing on building relationships, and have made great strides toward collaboration in several areas.

First, our students are all participating in mentoring this year.  Every student is assigned a staff member.  They meet as a small group (15-20) almost every other week, and focus on a variety of topics including goal setting, community service, career choices, and academic success.  In April, all students will be inviting a parent to attend a student-led conference where the student will share with his or her mentor and parent/guardian their successes this school year!

Second, the Cab Calloway School Fund, a 501c3 established to support our school has partnered with the school and our parent support organizations to make improvements to our school.  Our first joint project this year with the PTSO and the Theatre Fan Club was to evaluate and make improvements to the sound system in our theatre.  Hopefully, if you have attended any productions recently in our theatre, you’ve noticed how much better the sound is this year!  Thank you to all for collaborating in this venture!

The Fund is also working with our District, the Charter School of Wilmington, and business partners in our community to move toward raising the funds to renovate our theatre.  This is a long-term project, however, a very important one worthy of the time it is taking to bring this project to fruition.  We are also working on the development of a recording studio, and have partnered with the University of Delaware and Red Clay to enhance our strings program, making it a major for the first time ever in Cab’s history!

Are you interested in an arts summer program?  Cab Calloway School in partnership with the Cab Calloway School Fund will be offering our first Cab Calloway Summer School of the Arts!  This is the first of its kind in our area, focusing on students in grades 4-7, offering an integrated arts/academic enrichment program that will be fun for kids!  For more information, visit the website at:  www.cabsummer.org

Our seniors have been very busy with the college application process!  Of our 103 seniors, 83 have applied to at least one college already, and many have applied to 6-8 colleges of their choice.  Acceptance letters are beginning to come in – it’s a very exciting time for our seniors!

Finally, we are so thankful for our parents!  You have been tremendously supportive this year from volunteering to donating to United Way or the Cab Fund’s first annual appeal.  We thank you for the many ways you support our students, our staff and our school community!

Here’s to a fabulous second half of our school year!
