The nurse is a member of the school's professional staff and contributes to the total educational program.

School nurses are registered nurses with a Bachelor's Degree in Nursing and additional training in School Nursing.

Delaware School Nurses Mission statement:

Delaware School Nursing services meet the dynamic health needs of all Delaware students, maximizing their ability to participate in educational activities and achieve optimal wellness. Key components of school nursing services include early identification and interviention, health education and promotion, multi-faceted collaboration and the direct services of a nurse for each school.

School Nurse Responsibilities:

  • The School nurse provides health care to the school community.
    • To assume responsibility for the care of the sick and injured in keeping with school policy
    • Case management of students with chronic illnesses
    • Administers medication and treatments within State of Delaware guidelines
  • The school nurse provides leadership for the provision of health services.
  • The school nurse provides screening and referral for health conditions.
    • To appraise and identify the health needs of the students through screenings such as vision, hearing, postural/gait, tuberculin testing and physical examinations.
    • To maintain adequate and up-to-date health records, insuring immunization compliance.
  • The school nurse provides health counseling to students and parents
  • The school nurse presents health education both informally and formally as requested
  • Ths school nurse serves as a liaiason between school personnel, family, community and health care providers.

State of Delaware Immunization Requirements:

  • Four or more doses of diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis (DTaP, DTP) with the following exceptions:
    • a child who received a fourth dose prior to the fourth birthday must have a fifth dose;
    • a child who received the first dose of Td (adult) at or after age seven may meet this requirement with only three doses of Td (adult)
  • A booster dose of Td (adult) is recommended for all students, five years after the last DTaP, DTP or DT dose was administered
  • Three or more doses of inactivated polio virus (IPV), oral polio vaccine (OPV) with the following exception: A child who received a third dose prior to the fourth birthday must have a fourth dose.
  • Two doses of measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine. The first dose should be administered on or after the age of 12 months. The second dose should be administered after the fourth birthday
  • Three doses of Hepatitis B vaccine
  • Two doses of Varicella vaccine
  • A PPD tuberculin skin test
  • A physical examination within 2 years prior to entry

All students must submit a new emergency card each school year.
